After reading engineering at St John’s College, Cambridge and enjoying a brief career in industry, Sir Andrew joined the Royal Artillery in 1981. His military service has covered a mix of regimental and staff appointments including commanding 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery.

He has deployed on operations to Northern Ireland, the Balkans and as Deputy Commander of 1st (United Kingdom) Armoured Division during the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the months immediately following it. Latter roles were in the people area — firstly as the Army’s Director General Personnel, then as Military Secretary and, between 2013 and April 2016, as Chief of Defence People.

In September 2016 having left the Army, Sir Andrew became Chief Executive of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. He became the Master Gunner St James’s Park on 1st May 2017. Sir Andrew is also the Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, a Governor of Sedbergh School, a trustee of both the Armed Forces Parliamentary Trust and also the On-Course Foundation and I am the President of Tidworth Garrison Golf Club on top of being Patron to FWP.

Sir Andrew is married to wife Sally and they have two sons, one of whom is serving in the Royal Artillery.

His hobbies include bad golf, slow swimming, pedestrian skiing, and the brute force part of gardening.
