Explore Gosport’s LGBTQ+ Past

Discover how legislation in the 18th and 19th century impacted on real lives…

Join Beckie Smith, our new VCW for the South East, for this talk and exhibition by Voices for Pride, an LGBTQ+ history project focusing on uncovering the history in the local area. It will showcase the story of one persons life in particular; James Nehemiah Taylor, a Royal Naval surgeon who was sentenced to death and executed in Portsmouth Harbour in 1809, for having “committed unnatural and detestable crimes” and the search for his resting place. You’ll also hear about some of the other people that have been uncovered and their stories.

Young people will deliver this event, explaining their archival research, and the journey it has lead them on to understand the impact that law has had.

Beckie is really looking forward to this event and will be there representing FWP. It would be lovely for her to connect with people, so please do come and say hello if you’re attending!
