Professor Andrew Hartle was still at medical school when he joined the Royal Air Force as a Medical Cadet. He was Junior Medical Officer at RAF Valley, then trained in anaesthesia at RAF Hospitals in the UK and Germany.
He undertook aeromedical duties during Operation GRANBY (the first Gulf War). He was outed by a Sunday tabloid in 1996, suspended from duty, and dismissed the following year.
Andrew completed his training in London and the USA. In 2001 he was appointed a Consultant Anaesthetist at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, and then Professor of Practice (Anaesthesia) at Imperial College London in 2021. He’s been Head of Department, chaired numerous Trust Committees and the LGBTQ+ Staff Network.
He’s been President of the Association of Anaesthetists, the Royal Society of Medicine Anaesthesia Section, and of the Tri-Service Anaesthetic Society, and Council Member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, and of the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists. He’s currently the Honorary Civilian Consultant Advisor in Anaesthesia to the Royal Air Force. He was the first out gay man to hold each of these appointments.
