Sharon Pickering (In post from 19 Jan 2026)

Veteran Community Worker (VCW) – Midlands
(She/Her/Hers)

Sharon is a proud veteran of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) who experienced dismissal under the historic ban on LGBTQ+ personnel. That moment changed the course of her life, but it also ignited a passion for advocacy and inclusion that continues to drive her today.

After leaving the military, Sharon served 21 years as a police officer, specialising in mental health and safeguarding. Sharon’s policing career taught her resilience, empathy, and the importance of protecting the most vulnerable—skills she now uses to support veterans and their families.

Sharon has real lived experience of the ban and the FRS process, and understands the deep impact it had on individuals and communities. Today, she works with Fighting With Pride and other organisations to ensure that those affected are recognised, supported, and never forgotten.

Sharon is also a volunteer at the National Memorial Arboretum, an Army Cadet Force leader, and an active advocate for LGBTQ+ veterans. From laying flowers at memorials to marching at the Festival of Remembrance, Sharon strives to honour the past while building a more inclusive future.

In her spare time she loves to explore the country in the motorhome with her partner Jo & their 2 dogs Jessie & Jarvis.
